If you're in peak physical condition, and the difference or perceived difference between mid and top level components might make a difference between winning and losing, then by all means go for the top. If you're a guy /gal riding for amusement, you need to lose every last ounce of fat and develop every ounce of muscle you can before you need to worry about the difference between a component that was the premier design a decade ago vs. the latest from the marketing and design labs. There's just not enough performance distinction to matter at this point for most riders.

If bikes cost what cars cost, you wouldn't see people buying top of the line. They'd easily justify sanity like I promote. But, you can go top of the line with a bike for a price most people can muster, so they rationalize it and spend it. It's nuts - instead spend a reasonable amount on the bike and spend the rest on your kid's education or on a charity.
