About ten years ago I was applying for a Director of Engineering position at a Stone Quarry/Aggregate Producer/Concrete Producer/Asphalt Producer in the Raleigh area. As part of the pre-interview data submittal process the employer's HR person provided me with a list of around 20 personality traits for which I was to evaluate and rank myself on a One to Ten Scale, then return to them.
My wife, oldest son, and myself were having dinner when my wife asked me how I evaluated myself, and to share the results with them before sending the results to the potential employer. I read off each personality trait description to them and shared my self-evaluation score. The two of them agreed with nearly all of my rankings. For a couple of the items they suggested a score adjustment of one point, either up or down.
Then I got to "Methodical".
In my mind the term methodical means some one who is slow, plodding, reluctant to change, approaches every problem in the same manner regardless of its applicability, etc. I have my favorite tools and methods but I also never turn away a potential means to improve the process either. I ranked myself as a Three.
When I announced this score my son and wife both stopped in mid chew. They looked at each other with a surprised look, locked eyes, then turned to look at me. In a slow measured voice my son asked "Dad, can you give yourself an Eleven?"
Then they both started laughing so hard that partially chewed food was flying across the table at each other.
Sigh...........
