I get what you are saying re commuting. Short trips stuck in traffic really is hard on cars. Ours don't see as much of that (our traffic is not so bad with some open road mixed in). The old ones typically stay within ~100 miles of home though. No big deal to get a tow back if the worst happens.
I guess the other consideration is that if we're going 1000+ miles, a large % of that is fairly remote in general, and really remote in SAAB terms. I know California has some fairly remote spots, but there are some really long stretches in Canada with little around, not even a gas station, and for the most part, only the biggest cities have anything SAAB around. Pretty much any small town shop knows what to do with a Suburban, but most will look at you like you have 3 heads if you show up with some weird European car with "the engine in backwards". In many cases, one can work out a solution with what is available (and I usually carry a few key spare parts), but it can be more of a headache.
