From what I've read the 2004-2005 model years are the sweet spot for the 9-5. The PCV system was finally updated to lick the sludging problem and the next round of decontenting by GM had not yet started. (I spent some time looking into the 9-5 when it looked like I would need a replacement for my 9000.)
If you are looking at Subarus of the same vintage the 4-cylinder, non-turbo models (which is most of them) have problems with head gaskets. They also tend to eat front CV joints, I think due to proximity of the exhaust. A friend bought a garaged, little-old-lady 2004 Outback a couple of years ago and right away it needed those items repaired despite low mileage and otherwise good condition. (Head gaskets are a big job since you need to pull the engine.)
