I have a handful of 9-5s and Im very happy with them. They have been remarkably reliable very comfortable and great open road cars. I came to the 9-5s after many years of 900's with a 9000 Aero thrown in for good measure.

In my opinion sludge is not too much of an issue any longer. Cars that succumbed to sludge are long gone and the survivors (the ones that received good care and maintenance) are solid.

Sludging is related to the PCV system and the earlier cars received a number of PCV updates. ~04 the PCV was fixed from the factory, but the last update for the older cars is effective (informally known as update #6)

That said you definitely want to include the PCV system (regardless of year) in your maintenance rotation. The system is involved and the components clog, rot and fail. I tend to replace the PCV components ~60k

As 900 person you might appreciate the "faux clamshell" hood on the 9-5. it is a nod to the 900 (although it opens ... what some would say ... normally)

You also might prefer the '99-'05 interior and dash. These years were true to the Saab orange and green dash aesthetic. I like the dash much better in these models. The '06-'09 dash and radio were "GM-ized" and pretty unremarkable, visually at least.

Compared to an outback? the 9-5 looks much better, it rides better, it's more powerful, it's more comfortable, it has more amenities, and <arguably> more reliable.
