I kinda feel I got on the web late getting the first site up and running in early 1995. I was living with 4 other guys in a house in Silicon Valley and we installed Slackware Linux on an old 486 PC I had lying around not being used. We used Warp.org as our domain name. We had a dedicated telephone line in to another server run by a friend in our town. He, in turn, had an 18 mile high speed wireless connection running from his house to the top of the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose. That was The Saab Network first web site connection history.
Then, thanks to Jason Philbrook and Jason Simmonds of Midcoast Maine Internet, they hosted the web site at the ISP they owned on a very nice fast connection. In 1988, the traffic was heavy enough that I needed to move it and I had an $800/month T1 9 (only 1.5Mpbs) installed at my home and I hosted the server on Red Hat Linux in my office closet. In 2012, I migrated to Comcast Business Class which gives us 100 Mpbs. Before anyone says anything about co-hosting (which I did quite a bit of for a business called eScribe.com which I ran for about 5 years with a good friend of mine), I don't like having to drive to San Jose or Fremont to work on my server. I like having 5 dedicated IP addresses to use and having the production and backup servers sitting in my closet behind me. I can do hands on any time I want.
