If I had to choose only one air tool to have it would be a 1/2" drive impact gun. 95 % of your wrenching needs can be handled by a hand ratchet. The impact gun comes in handy loosening suspension, caliper, and lug bolts/nuts. The biggest concern is the size of your compressor. To constantly run an air ratchet you ned a 60 gallon tank and about 5 H.P. For years I used a 2 H.P. 12 gallon compressor to power my impact gun, It worked for loosening very tight bolts. However my air ratchet put the hurt on the compressor. It constantly ran.
Now I have a 60 gallon compressor at my disposal. My current inventory of air tools are: 2 1/2" drive impact guns, 3/8" impact gun, 1/4" air ratchet, 3/8" air ratchet, 1/2" air ratchet, air drill, die grinder, dual action air sander, and my favorite of all the air chisel. The majority of my air tools are cheap no-name brands. My impact guns are brand name units.
My reccomendation is to purchase Ingersol Rand air tools. The IR 231 is an excellant 1/2" gun. It has plenty of power. Ingersol Rand is available at Sears or via mail order catalogs.
