Actually the Mac strut goes back even further....47 I think
As I recall the Vega was the first to use the Reynolds 390 (490?) silicone impregnated aluminum for an Engine block. Too bad they designed a cooling system where the heater core was higher than the head. First time you drained and refilled the cooling system you had a big bubble in the system upstream from the head. The head cooled unevenly and warped. Once that happened, you invariably overheated, leeching the silicone out of the aluminum. The engine was pretty much gone at that point. Later versions were MUCH better after the heater core was moved.
Mercedes used the same material in the aluminum V8's they intrduced in the late '70's. Interestingly enough, the early versions of the 3.8 litre unit had a single row cam chain which over time stretched, broke, and did serious engine damage. While MB does have problems, they certainly haven't had as many as GM.
As far as maintaining my current models, yes I will do that for the life of the car(s). If SAABs have lost what makes me like them I will purchase some other brand.
