Coolknight,

Nice, but not very usefull? You are comparing apples to oranges on this one. I am not sure, but I really do not think that you are getting the point, as to why Audi has a new 3.0 liter 30 valve V6. I agree with you that a 60 deg V6 is better than a 90 deg V6 because there is no need for a balance shaft. Although, nothing compares to a flat-6 or inline-6 for smoothness. I also agree that it might not really make a great deal of difference from having 4-valves per cylinder or 5-valves per cylinder. The Saab 2.3 HOT makes a maximum of 240hp and is an inline-4. Audi decided to develope a 3.0 V6 that makes 220hp because it is smooth, refined, and very tractable. When they bring out their new S4 & A6 3.0T with BiTurbo it will probably make in excess of 320hp. Put a chip in the car and it might make close to 390hp. Which engine do you think has more potential? Which would you rather have, a 240hp inline-4 step 3 to 300hp or a 320hp V6 chipped to 390hp? How much power do you think you can get out of a inline-4 when you want to play with the big boys like the new M3 and new CLK55? In two years if you happen to have a chipped Saab that has a 2.3 HOT inline-4 and a new chipped Quattro S4 pulls up next to you, will you still think that it is "nice but not very usefull"? BTW, I am not an Audi enthusiast at all, but I just think that you might be giving it an unfair judgement. The high pressure 2.4 liter 5-cylinder Volvo S60R engines makes 300hp + 50/50 Haldex AWD. Chipping it might bring it to 350hp or 360hp, so why would companies like Audi or Volvo want to use a 4-cylinder when chipped and in max overboost makes only 300hp? Just curious...
