Twenty years ago I went to school in Linköping, Sweden. Back then it seemed that one third of the population drove SAABs, one third Volvos and one third Mercs. BMWs were a rare sight and Audis were only driven by people who didn't like cars ...
I think the number of SAABs was probably above the national average since Linköping was where SAAB planes were built (my best friend at school was very pro-SAAB - his father worked at the SAAB plant). Actually, I think Volvos have always been more abundant nationwide.
I think back then SAABs were considered sensible and innovative - whereas Volvos were just sensible ... Mercs were considered somewhat more exclusive.
Anyway, that's just the way I remember things. The facts are the following.
20 most popular cars in Sweden in September 2000 (September 1999 sales in brackets):
1/ Volvo S/V/C70, 21.438 (16.963).
2/ Saab 9-5, 11.618 (9.924).
3/ Volvo S40/V40, 10.282 (13.862).
4/ VW Passat, 8.875 (8.039).
5/ VW Golf, 8.163 (7.795).
6/ Saab 900/9-3, 7.953 (7.685).
7/ Renault Mégane, 7.363 (4.958).
8/ Ford Focus, 6.783 (7.098).
9/ Opel Astra, 5.252 (6.275).
10/ Volvo S80, 5.111 (8.715).
11/ Skoda Octavia.
12/ Toyota Corolla.
13/ VW Polo.
14/ Renault Clio.
15/ Toyota Avensis.
16/ Audi A4.
17/ Ford Mondeo.
18/ Audi A6.
19/ Skoda Felicia.
20/ Toyota Yaris.
BTW, I think Sweden is the only major country in Europe where the top sellers are LARGE cars. In the rest of Europe the Top 10 tends to be dominated by VW Golfs and Fiat Puntos ...

Caspar
