Tom --

I'm new to this list, but your question is exactly the same question I have been pondering for the last few weeks as we have been looking seriously at either a 2001 9-5SE or a TL to replace my 97 900SE when it comes off lease in less than a month. Its a close call, but we're probably going with the 9-5SE, and here's why:

1. Amazingly, the lease price on these automobiles is almost identical for a 36 month, 36,000 mile lease. The "no haggle" price I was quoted on the 2001 TL w/o navigation system was $488/month with about $950 upfront. The quote on the 2001 9-5SE with metallic paint and heated seats was $450/month with about $2600 upfront. The reason the 9-5 is so competitive is that Saab is offering a very low lease financing rate and, as a prior Saab lessor, I am eligible to purchase the car for about $500 under invoice (I am also eligible to purchse the car at invoice through another program at my company). So although the Saab has a MSRP of about $10,000 more, the interest charge on the loan is much less than on the Acura and depreciation is not all that much more than the Acura. At least from a leasing standpoint, the prices are very competitive.

2. The TL is a great, solid feeling car with strong acceleration off the line, and I'm sure the reliability will be outstanding. However, I found the 9-5 to be even more so, and I expect the reliability will be quite good as well. Both my Saab and Acura dealers offer loaner cars.

3. Now, the slightly more controversial part. I felt that the switchgear on the Acura, and the overall feeling of quality of the T-L(at least as I judge quality) was not as good as the 9-5. Kinda like the difference between wood veneer and solid wood, if you know what I mean.

4. Also, the Saab now comes with 3 years of scheduled maintenance standard -- the Acura does not. A free year of OnStar is kinda cool and should be enough time to decide whether I want to pay for it.

Good luck on your decision -- I dont think you can go wrong either way. Hope this helps.
