I am pi$$ed about SUVs period. That SAAB is crossing to the enemy is revolting. Especially since it drains limited developmental resources from the development and refinement of the SAAB car line.
Instead they should be going for the SUV jugular by emphasizing the qualities of a good road car and how they are intended to keep you from unplanned off-road "excursions".
Also, now that people are paying a little attention to gas prices, SAAB should be drawing attention to the AREO's amazing combination of incredible performance, excellent safety and decent gas mileage. The 9-5 AREO is an irrefutable counter argument to any SUV owner who tries to argue that they need to drive a vehicle that gets less than 18 mpg on the highway (often much less) in order to have space, safety or performance.
Unfortunately, I can't agree that the SUV is on the brink of downfall. Five years ago I stated it was a trend that would soon pass--was I wrong. It has become a standard staple on America's automotive menu. That the Europeans are jumping on the bandwagon in order to have something to offer in the US underscores this point. Most people are just clueless-- they don’t understand how pointless SUVs are as on-road vehicles never mind that most of SUVs sold aren’t even capable off-road vehicles.
