Well, we have both a '97 900 SET and a BMW '97 328i in my household, so i can perhaps comment a bit?

The saab is by far a better value based on feature content; it has more features than the BMW and cost a few thousand less. It has things like memory power seats, keyless entry, a glass sunroof, came with the CD changer, etc. It has a roomier interior and of course the awesome hatchback. I also like the uniqieness of the saab better.

The BMW definitely is handles better and smoother at the same time, which is nice, it gets us better gas mileage, and has fewer rattly bits. It has fewer features, but they often seem to be better executed, for example, you can have the sunroof open in the BMW on the highway, even at very high speeds, and it's still very quiet. The trip computer also has more feature content, the heated seats have 2 settings and kick down from "high" after awhile, etc.

So the saab offers more feature value, and, IMO the bmw more refinement value. I like having both in the house very much. The BMW will cost more to purchase in general. If you are buying, and might resell soon, part of this is negated because the BMW resells very well, if you use the awesome saab leases, it's exaggerated, and the saab comes out substantially ahead.

I think saab should do one BIG thing: get a certified pre-owned program like other upscale makes offer. When a car is returned off lease, or traded in, inspect it, fix anything, and resell it for maybe 2-3K extra, with the warranty extended to 5 years, 100K miles. Since the 2 issues the average consumer has with saabs are resale and reliability, this helps to fix both of those. People will be more willing to buy a car that's been inspected and the dealer will stand behind for three more years, and resale will be boosted with fewer 2-4 year old cars coming on the open market cheaply.
