BMW, Saab & Oil Madness!!!!!

Just rec'd my new Automobile magazine & they had a long term review (12 mos
of the 323i. The auto mags go by the book on maintenance when reviewing a
car. BMW uses a chip to tell the owner when to change the oil. The 323i
being reviewed by Automobile came in for it's FIRST oil change at just
under 15,000 miles. We are talking about dino oil in a wonderful BMW 6-cyl.
engine. Are these companies crazy? I know there is an emphasis today on
selling low maint. to the buyer when he or she walks into the dealership,
but at what cost. When I bought my '96 9000CS, the Saab salesman extolled
the virtues of Saab's 10,000 mile oil change. On a turbo? With dino oil?
I've seen 10,000 mile dino oil (never seen 15,000 mi. oil) & it is not a
pretty sight. You are also using a regular paper oil filter way beyond it's
normal service life!
GM is using change oil lights on some of it's new cars & trucks, but it is
basically a mileage clock that kicks on around 7500. I do not think this is
a good trend that serves the consumer well. Especially on engines that can
run anywhere from $8,000 to $15,000 out of the box!
