And I would assume you're talking about a "Classic" 900 Series. 9000's are great cars too. I prefer the 900 for styling, but that's subjective...
If you are talking about the NG900's, avoid the first year generally, but specifically avoid the V6. Stay well away from them.
All classic 900's and all but a very few 9000's were 4 cyl cars. A couple late model 9000's could be had with the V6. The 4 cyl cars were 2.0 normally aspirated, 2.1 normally aspirated in later models, and 2.0 turbo. Through the years they got tuned here in the States to up to 185bhp in the last model year. They can be tuned to WELL over that. (Just check the Performance BB).
Some weak points on all 900's were the pinion bearing, which I believe was fixed in either '90 or '91 (hp increased over the years, but the final drive wasn't updated until late to take that power), and third gear.
Some wear items to be aware of are the output shaft on the passenger side of the engine tends to get a lot of stress as the engine torques over and presses on that side.
The headliner, as you have obviously observed is a common problem. This is pretty easily repaired though and most Saabers have done it. (Twice on my '88 900S before I sold it with 305,000 miles)
The reputation of being a repair monger is somewhat unfounded in my opinion. As you see, with 305,000 miles on my last car, I had few major problems. If you keep the maintenance up to date you should have no problems. And if you do notice a problem, fix it immediately before it becomes a major one.
Hope that helps! Good luck with your search!
