yup the straight 6 does come at the expense of usable space in the car, but if the sport/performance aspects of the car are the most important, then that's a sacrifice I guess they're willing to make. They are awesome engines, no doubt.
Don't know what the balance shafts and turbo add to the engine. It's probably less than the extra block material, head, pistons, crankshaft, etc. that the extra 2 cylinders add. Anybody know the difference between the 4 and 6 cylinder 9-5's?
What really matters is how fast you can go and how nice the engine sounds while you're doing it. A combination of power and smoothness is key in a luxury car. Good fuel economy is a nice touch, but really a secondary consideration when you're talking $30k+ cars.
