Hi Jeff,
To play devil's advocate with my fellow Saab owner, if you want to
go really fast in a straight line and have a wonderful sounding engine,
the "ultimate" would be a 5.0L V8 Ford Mustang?
Since we are fans of European automobiles, I don't think so. So, let's
not forget handling. By insisting on I6, BMW has to OF NECESSITY go
with RWD, which adds the extra weight of all that steel connecting
the engine to the rear wheels and playing havoc with power to weight
ratio. Otherwise, BMW would have all the dry pavement handling
characteristics of an Acura (which is to say poor).
On a FWD automobile, a big engine will plant the front end better
and allow better 0-60 straight line acceleration times. However, this
comes at the price of more pronounced understeer. My 9-5 has *ever*
so slight understeer due to front-end weight savings as compared to V6 or
I6.
So, a luxury *European* sports sedan should go fast in a crooked line
and have a great sounding engine, and I believe that Saab strikes a nice
compromise with powerful turbo-charged I4 engines with FWD which offers
excellent dry pavement handling as well as excellent wet pavement handling,
while affording lots of space in the back seats and trunk.
thanks
Jae
