In terms of longevity, the C900s are certainly longer lived. They are older. The remaining ones are in the hands of Saab fanatics who can take care of them and as a result, they'll run for several 100K miles. The NG900s don't have the same extremely unique style nor the weight of the C900s... they are different... like comparing a tank to a sewing machine.
As far as reliability, the C900 was never really reliable by current standards. They need constant care and maintenance. The common quote is that there is "always something to do" on the car. The NG900s with the Japanese auto transmissions and the Swedish manual trans are much more reliable units. But they are more complicated in the electrical areas, and thus harder to diagnose.
If you want a low cost, reliable, easy to maintain vehicle, it seems that the NG900 or 9-3 would win out. I can't say my C900 is a 'just get in and drive it everyday without a care' kinda vehicle. The newer NG900s and 9-3s approach that, but not to the level of a Toyota, for example.
But my '91 900 is a very unique vehicle. Unlike a NG900 or 9-3, it turns heads. People comment on it. It feels strange, interesting, special. That's why we love 'em so much.
