It's certainly admirable to want to avoid dept but I don't see this going well. The way these things typically go is that something catastrophic will go wrong. It might not be readily apparent, he'll be stranded somewhere, he'll have to pay to haul it, pay a mechanic to figure out what's wrong, then he'll have to find a replacement in a rush. The maintenance work you're doing amounts to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. This car is a dead man walking. Finally, I don't know where your son is but having a car die suddenly in urban traffic can literally cost you your life. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be immobile on or alongside a road like 696, 275 or even Telegraph, a surface street where traffic goes 60 mph. Your son needs to focus on his studies (a plenty hard job all by itself) not screwing around with some POS car.
