Missing air bags on a newer model car bought used?? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 23 Mar 2016 05:10:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The teacher with whom my wife works totalled her Chevy Cruze last week. She was using her cell phone while driving, most likely engaged in a highly emotional conversation (making a bad idea even worse!), on a two lane paved country road at lunch time.
She drifted off the right hand side of the road, struck a headwall/end wall of a culvert serving an abandoned driveway, went air born, landed in the middle of the road, then skidded nose first into a water filled ditch. The ditch was shallow enough that she was able to drive out of it. The right front wheel was dented/destroyed , front end damage to the car, probably undercarriage or body structure damage, and both side air bags deployed. The driver and front passenger air bags did not deploy!
I thought this was odd until my wife told me last night that her friend had purchased this car used. Now I suspect the car may not have even had airbags in those positions - especially if the car was purchased from other than a Dealership.
Insurance Co valued car at ~$12K and repair estimates closely approached or exceeded that value. A higher mileage Cruze (long commute) at that value must have been a fairly new model.
Just a heads up that some unscrupulous people remove airbags from used vehicles to resell the bags on the used parts market. This could happen even on newer model cars. The airbags for current model cars might even be more vauable in the used parts market. Luckily no one was injured in this accident.
