I don't think that much has changed in 10 years... AWD still does not help you stop faster, so winter tires are still important anywhere that gets cold and sees snow and ice. AWD is now available on many normal cars and would have been on SAAB sedans today if SAAB was still in business (was available when they went out of business).

I also will agree with Craig on the rust factor - many of the places that see enough snow and ice to benefit from AWD also see enough salt to rot out a Mazda in about 5 years give or take... crazy how fast the mazda 3 rusts! I suppose there are rural locales where AWD is needed for dirt/mud, or some cold western areas that use sand without salt...

The other thing that surprised me was the comment that the CX3 is taller, but does not have increased ride height. To me, that is not very useful. In my view, the whole point of vehicles like the CrossTrek is that they have more clearance, thereby enabling them to better get through more snow or messier rural roads. CX3 does seem to target that same segment, so I think it will be a good seller for Mazda, at least around here. But, if the Crosstrek has equivalent handling and more clearance, well, that would be more appealing. Would I buy one? Heck no. But lots of others would... and at least in these parts, at this time of year, they should still have snow tires on them!
