It doesn't really get you the same. Also good, but different. AWD gives you better ability to accelerate. There is absolutely no benefit when you are stopping.
That said many people *think* it's equivalent whether or not it is.
If you keep new, appropriate, all season tires on your AWD car every winter (lots of tread depth with a pattern that has good snow/water evacuation and adequate siping), and if you live in an area with not too much winter or in an urban area where roads are plowed fairly regularly, then yeah, it probably makes a fair bit of sense.
There are vast differences in all season tires now. Everything from models like Nokian WR that get the full winter designation to performance tires that are completely useless in a touch of snow. So it really depends what tires you put on the car more than anything. Tires are the connection to the road, not AWD, so they have the most impact (braking, turning, etc). AWD helps but is not a panacea.
I used to use summer tires in summer, but have switched to higher performance all seasons simply because they work better in the cold temperatures, allowing me to extend the change over dates. There is no way I would be caught dead driving with those tires in snow or ice, but Nokian WR or some equivalents would be fine in a fair bit of winter weather here.
