That's why I said it depends how you look at it and probably what sort of vehicle one is currently driving, or likes driving. I get what you are saying. There are similarities in shape, but what I'm saying (and DE also) is that there are differences in *proportion*. It's really obvious in those photos below. The CUVs (Q5, X3, Forester) are stretched vertically in the metal as well as wheels and suspension. This can affect handling (higher center of mass). It also can affect storage if they base an SUV/CUV on a smaller car platform (eg Forester is not as long as Outback - there is quite a significant difference between those vehicles). BTW, with Suby, it used to be "Outback" = raised + more plastic body cladding, and there was even "impreza outback"... which has come back recently as the "crosstour".
Sure, all of the wagons and cuv's are 2 box shapes, not 3 box. So is a minivan, and a school bus... doesn't mean they are the same. That said, it is really true that the lines are blurring (crossovers), but I think there is still a market for people who want a 2 box version of a sport sedan that isn't raised (eg 3 series wagon), or if raised, is raised just a little (eg A4 Allroad). To me BMW X1 is one of the most blurred wagon/CUV crossovers (again though, pretty small). Those things are selling like hotcakes around here!
The idea of platform development where minor sheet metal/rear end styling changes enable a range of model choices (sedan, hatch, wagon, vert) makes sense economically and in terms of buyer choice (Germans especially are doing this). To go to a CUV on the same platform is a bit more design as more sheet metal/body parts need to change (and driving dynamics also). They usually get a completely new model name also.
Semantics? maybe? maybe not? depends on how you look at it!
