Norm's article really panned the Encore's engine in terms of "fun to drive". They basically compared the technical capability of the cars, clearly the X1 was superior performance-wise, then effectively defined the intended purpose of both as being for hipsters to get groceries in potholed urban neighbourhoods, therefore performance doesn't matter, so the Encore is a better vehicle for that purpose (especially where it costs $13k less)... ok... logical... does the Encore run on recycled vegetable oil?
Here's a photo of the crosstrek with an impreza. It's pretty clearly just a raised impreza with extra fender etc cladding. This is much like the Impreza Outback of the 1990's. I had a friend who owned one of those and absolutely loved it as a snow car. He replaced it with a Forester (which he hated, largely due to its atrocious handling). Then replaced that with a hybrid Crosstrek (subaru owners don't cross shop outside subaru it seems)... he loves the Crosstrek.
I think size wise, it is true that Crosstrek would be closer to Encore than Forester... Shape, well, hard to say... The Encore looks taller but I couldn't find a photo of the 2 side by side. My gut feel is the crosstrek would be more fun (does the encore come as a manual?), but Subaru would do their customers a huge favour and offer a turbo version (WRX Crosstrek?)...
