It's interesting though because a lot of former Volvo wagon owners switched over to Outbacks. Outbacks can be trimmed pretty similarly to a XC70 and in many respects on paper, they are pretty similar vehicles.
msrp here for a T6 xc70 is about $47k. A higher spec Outback (comparable trim level to a Volvo) runs about $40k. So a sizeable gap, but Volvo tends to discount much more here, so they are not as far apart on price as that might seem. Base model pricing has a bigger gap ($43k vs $28k) but most of the Outbacks I see around here are pretty high spec. I haven't driven an Outback in quite a while - would probably be worth a try. Last I looked, used pricing was pretty much identical (at 3 years old).
Obviously the STI crowd is a totally different market!
Looking at the volvo website, they've got a lot of wagon products as of 2017: In addition to the XC70 and V60, they have a V60 "Cross country" and a V90... actually, they have a S60 Cross country as well... I think more manufacturers are recognizing that there is a market for *cars*, with a lower center of gravity, but just a little bit more clearance...
Will be interesting to see how they sell!
