Other than two SPGs and one Jeep, my wife and I have an '85 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper. Since the day I bought it, the brakes just don't work well. Meaning I stomp on them and I will roll to a stop. A squealing stop is not possible. When I hit the brakes the pedal seems to "bottom out" and further braking is not possible. Pumping them once adds maybe ten percent to stopping. They work well enough (?) to take it to Yellowstone and back (from MN), but man did I give the car ahead of us plenty of room. Totally unsafe in my mind. I replaced the master cylinder, bled the brakes with a mighty vac, and had two specialists look at it. Both mechanics said something like: "that's just the way these old vans are". I'm calling BS on that one. The first pre-sale inspection stated that they looked at the pads and rotors/drums and it was good. Could it be as simple as replacing pads? Still air/bad fluid in the system (though I ran clear fluid out the zerks)? ANY ideas are appreciated.
