I don't know what you're feeling, but it's silly to say all brake systems are the same. Everything about brakes is variable, from the amount of assist to the hydraulic ratios, to mechanical advantage to the clamping force of the calipers and structural integrity of everything involved. There is a WORLD of difference in brakes between a Porsche 930 and everything else. I honestly don't know how you could assert that a Vanagon and a Porsche should feel/stop/perform the same.
If you *know* something is wrong then start at the top and work your way down, or vice versa. It sounded to me like you weren't sure something was wrong. Like I said, I would trade seat time with another owner and compare notes. "Doesn't stop like I expect it should" is not enough information to do anything useful with over the internet on a Saab forum.
