I think a lot of people here would consider Audis. They are nice cars. I think we mostly hold them to a higher standard, partly because they are good (and not cheap!)... same as for Volvo, BMW, Merc... there are pros and cons to every vehicle, and it sure would be nice if it was easier to do a major service on the Audis (which is usually why they get dumped around 100k), but it sure would be nice if the rear suspension of the 9-5 could handle more load without imploding.
I would probably consider an A4, actually, especially the Allroad A4 with 2.0T... but we never buy new, and the maintenance complexity is a concern. The other bigger factor is our SAABs just keep going and going with few problems, and where automotive technology is undergoing significant flux at the moment, our next "newish" car is likely to have an electric drive train of some sort... so while I like the Allroad, I also like the Tesla Model S, and I would be more interested in an electric/hybrid Allroad (if one ever existed) than what is out now... so the longer we wait, the fewer car purchases we need to make! I'm hoping not to have to buy another "conventional" ICE-only based car again. So far the SAABs are holding up well enough that that is realistic. It's too bad you had so much trouble with the 2001. That seems common with first owners up to about 2003. We have a 2004 that we bought used maybe 6 or 7 years ago now (for about 1/10th the cost of brand new) and aside from the rear suspension, it has been reliable, and cheap to own... It is unfortunate that it took them quite so long to get the 9-5 right (eg a modern DIC failure is not likely to leave you stranded - you'll get a code and might be able to drive fine for another 6 months with few issues)... the early 9-5's were the best looking imho!
