I wouldn't recommend a front wheel drive car for the mountains. While they're fine on main roads, on steep roads and driveways they transfer the weight to the rear of the car. I went for quite a few wild rides in my Jetta, even with studded snow tires. Also I wouldn't recommend any AWD Volvo in that price range--it would likely be a real money pit. Subarus are very pricey out there so $5K wouldn't buy much--a base Legacy or Impressive might work since no one tends to want them. The Rav4 and CRVs would be the best bet. Ford Escape would give a lot of bank for the buck. Any of your mainstream utes like Explorers or Grand Cherokees have pretty seamless AWD/4WD. If she's on the front range the MB would probably work fine---studded snows and a little weight in the back would be even better--they're pretty tough monkeys. I'm assuming it's new enough to have anti-lock brakes and traction control. If it's "trusty" she might want to stick with it.
