We will be buying whatever it is here in California, either up here in Sacramento or down in LA. AWD vehicles get a premium up here, but they don't get quite a bump down there. It'll need to make the drive to Colorado, but honestly probably won't see all that much use out there - maybe 4-5k per year. Still, it's gotta be reliable.
The newer Jeep options like Patriots are way out of the budget - the cheapest ones are in the $7k range and, at that point, I'd seriously just buy a newer CRV. ;)
I forgot Escape in my list, but the 2nd gen Escape/Mariner are my #1 choice right now - the 2.3/2.5l Duratec with a 5/6-speed auto and AWD ticks all of my boxes. Plus, being an Escape, resale value is crap. Where I'd be looking at an '02 or '03 CR-V, the same money buys an '07 Escape. I had an '01 for a while and actually quite liked it - it's about a perfect size and the AWD system is completely adequate. The addition of the AWD Duratec in the 2nd gen cars is perfect. She doesn't need a 3.0l V6 to get groceries!
