My gripe is the Push to Stop Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 18 Sep 2016 17:15:59 In Reply to: Wondering why no push to start?, AeroDave, Fri, 16 Sep 2016 22:09:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Depressing the same button also stops the car.
I am old enough to recognize the irony of the current Start/Stop push buttons that do not comply with the JIC (Joint Industrial Council) standards which all automakers adopted in the 1970's for the safety of the workers in the auto plants. In these standards one push button started the machine and another, a large Red mushroom head button, stopped the machine. The adoption of using a Red mushroom head button was to eliminate the panic confusion of "What button do I press to stop this thing?" The stop buttons also detent in the depressed position, so a user had to first pull the mushroom button away from its depressed position, then press the Start button to initiate activity of the machine
It could be argued that using a single push-button for both tasks is an obvious step backwards from a safety standard initiated ~40 years ago by the auto industry, although for stationary machines. Copying the casual start/stop button function of a computer or cell phone may not be the best choice for a vehicle travelling at 70mph.
