It wasn't that bad. The system was designed to be opened up and worked on with the control system power on (which is what we were working on being software guys). Besides the control system the rule was there were 2 separate electro-mechanical safety mechanisms to make sure the high-voltage things were off and grounded when the system was opened up. Drop bars and plugs that de-energized the power contactors. Plus a third manual 'chicken stick', a grounded hook on the end of an insulated pole used again to ground the enclosure. Also supposedly to let you pull someone out if necessary.
We only had one slightly scary incident, and that wasn't even on the real equipment. One EE was working on a high voltage power supply on the bench, and somehow the HV Cap bleed resistor was open, and he reached in and got quite a wallop. His hand was basically inoperative for about a day.
To this day I've still got habits from working on that equipment. Touch ground before touching any circuitry, and only one hand on the equipment, the other in your back pocket. The last thing you want is the current discharge path to go across your chest.
I miss all those guys. It was a fantastic job.
