was due to the fact they (Cayenne and Macan) were the cheapest ways of getting into a Porsche when they were introduced. Same with the early Mercedes SUV (ML320 at mere $35k, much much less than E class) and BMW X5 (less than 5 series sedan when introduced).
Compared to Saab, Porsche did one thing right: the management did not dilute brand equity during the early 1990's recession. In fact, Porsche discontinued the lower priced 944 in 1991, just as GM dressed up some Vectra to sell as the NG900 for cost-saving reasons. The 911, despite its humble Bug roots and the wrong engine placement, was kept at high price just for the heck of it as a niche product. That decision nearly drove Porsche bankrupt (but the same corporate owners were making money via VW and Audi in the third world during that time); when the economy recovered in the late 90's and the wealth disparity increased in the 2000's, having the ego-stroking Porsche brand intact proved highly profitable selling to the nuevoriche "badge whores."
