You get a CEL. You plug in the scan tool. You see it's a DIC code, you change the module in about 5 minutes... totally a non-issue. Ok, it costs $200, but in 6 years of 9-5 ownership, I've had one go bad once. That's with 2 9-5's in the family over that time (13 total car-years). Seriously, it is the first step in a spark plug change. Easy to do at the side of the road in the dark even if it got to that point... but nowadays at least (*) they give you tons of warning and nobody should ever be stranded by a DIC short of being pretty neglectful maintenance-wise... heck, iirc, cheaptech was driving around for months with a bad DIC before replacing (with no issues)... This is not to say that I think it is reasonable for them to fail, but that there are worse things that can happen on a car.
* - yes, I know, the early DIC's were more sudden, and I get it that it would be more of a PITA to have had trouble back then on a new car, especially if it took out the CAT also... As an aside though, that is a reason that one should never buy the early model years of a new car model... best to wait until the bugs are worked out!
Still would you rather have a timing belt go, or a hg, or some other thing that is catastrophic for the engine? Rebuilding engines and trannys is much more costly and takes the car off the road for more time, so a pretty big impact.
Even if it doesn't happen all of a sudden (eg slow coolant leak through a hg), the cost impact can be huge. CR pretty much completely ignores this and compares apples to oranges in their attempts to be "objective"... that was really all my point was... CR has a certain viewpoint/mindset, and if one subscribes to that, then CR will be useful, and if not, well, it's probably not even worth using as toilet paper... this would be true of many non-automotive items they review also...
