DICs in the 9000 don't usually throw any codes before failure. (Probably the same for all models equipped with the red type.) One minute they're working fine and the next you're dead on the side of the road.
This happened to me earlier this year in the '95 CSE. Fortunately it was next to a parking lot that I could limp into to install the spare DIC kept in the trunk. (We all keep a spare DIC handy, right?) So that wasn't too bad but I can think of a lot of places where that kind of sudden failure would be much more unpleasant.
