BMW may be an exception here... I've heard a lot of people say that they like RWD BMWs in snow. I think so much has to do with how a car is balanced, the tires etc... I still find the old SAABs so much better than the 9-5 for snow. In a snowstorm, my wife will often choose the 9-5 for the creature comforts, but I will always take the c900 winter beater... it always seems to keep right up with the many subies around these parts.
Other RWD cars... well, many are just brutal in snow... in particular mustangs and other american "muscle cars" with heavy engines... maybe it's just the characters who drive them, but it can be really tedious following some idiot spinning their wheels while fishtailing at 10mph... had an infinity driver almost swing a 360 in front of me while attempting a right hand turn yesterday... etc...
there is a degree of refinement that European cars have that seems to make a difference vs something like a Subaru that relies primarily on a "technology"... overall balance of design I think is really worth a lot. So maybe you are on to something, but for the most part AWD seems to be what everyone wants around here for winter anyway... and I will admit that as our SAABs age and we need to eventually think about replacements AWD is definitely a significant consideration for us as we look at other brands... most of which don't have the same balance of design for a winter climate as a c900 did...
