Let's not forget Saab had the 9-7, I love review in the link below, “It is a Chevy TrailBlazer with the ignition key between the seats.”
Actually Saab was quite aware in the 1990s that they were losing what had been repeat customers to not only AWD but an even larger share to SUVs. I saw this clearly in Colorado as fewer and fewer Saabs were seen in the high country and more and more Blazers, JGC and Explorers.
Coming up with a decent (not rebadged GM crappola) 4 wheel or AWD SUV would have probably been a sizeable boost to sales. The trend continues today, brands lacking a decent SUV/CUV are lagging in sales.
I occasionally see a 9-7 and have to bite my tongue to stop from laughing outloud. Did see one of the NG 9-5 recently, I don't think many were sold in CO - where back in the 70,80, and 90s Saabs were popular.
