Anyone here familiar with Triumph TR-6? Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Mon, 1 Oct 2018 16:17:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A young friend of mine (who wasn't even alive when British Leyland was pumping these out) just picked up his dream car over the weekend - a 1972 Triumph TR-6. Probably not the best car for someone who doesn't do his own wrenching, but he's been talking about getting one of these for years. I went with him to go pick it up.
Nice car, was previously restored, meticulous upkeep and detailing by the previous owner. Ran great on the trip back to my friend's house.
Then later after I leave he takes his wife out for a ride and British Leyland strikes again nearly 50 years later - the car suddenly dies and refused to run more than a few seconds at a time, sputtering badly, not wanting to idle. He managed to get it into a parking lot and got towed home by AAA. He also says there is a "ticking" sound coming from the engine, or at least somewhere in the engine compartment and there might be some backfiring through the carbs, observed by someone else who looked at it briefly. (This is about an hour drive away from me so I haven't had a chance to go check it out yet myself.)
I'm thinking vacuum leak (the brake booster is known not to work for one thing), bad condenser, points or distributor moved (timing off). Next level, timing chain may have jumped a couple of teeth.
Anything else specific to this car that might be causing this?
