There were 2 vacuum leaks, one minor and one pretty massive.
The vacuum retard on the distributor had a bad diaphragm. (The shop manual calls it a vacuum retard rather than advance. Probably part of the crude early 1970s emission controls. Then again those folks drive on the wrong side of the road, so who knows.) That was the smaller leak.
The big leak was the brake booster. Apparently on the drive back it wasn't leaking badly enough to cause a serious problem, but it finally let loose completely. The master cylinder does not appear to be losing brake fluid, so I don't know if the problem was caused by a previously leaking master cylinder killing the seals or just age.
Another issue was that the previous owner for whatever reason had set the idle speed to 500 rpm (he actually bragged about doing that) rather than the 800-850 recommended by the factory. This made the engine prone to stalling until it was thoroughly warmed up.
So after plugging the vacuum leaks and bringing the idle speed up to spec the car now runs great. Of course you really have to lean on the brake pedal without the power assist. It's pretty similar to an old Hornet with factory non-power front discs that I used to have. (The brake booster will of course be replaced.)
