If the Wrangler might be a little too Jeepish for you, you might want to consider a Liberty. I just had one as a rental for a week that included pretty severe off roading and was very pleased. On the road, you definitely know it is a truck compared to something like a RAV4, but it was pretty smooth and quiet. Off road, it didn't quite have the approach and departure angles or clearance of a Wrangler, but it did very well and does have a proper 4WD system. I think you can get a cool sliding canvas roof on it too. Or what about an FJ Cruiser, now that I think about it?
