MINI Cooper S ... anyone ?

Considering moving on from my trusty 2000 Viggen. Love the car and may change my mind about selling/keeping.
BUT... considering a Cooper S, in the 2008-2010 range. Anyone here have experience with them? I haven't taken a test drive yet, but my initial thoughts --
* I'm OK going small as our other car is a wagon anyway
* I'm attracted by combination of sporty handling, adequate ZIP, 30+ mpg
* Is the ride too choppy or harsh? (Mind you, I'm used to a Viggen.)
* What sort of real world mpg to they get?
* How's the acceleration compare?
* How's the build quality and reliability?
* I'll welcome any other insights. Thanks all!
