Still love my Saab (2000 Viggen), and I've toyed with the idea that when I do replace it I'll get a MINI Cooper S (manual of course).
Test drove a Cooper S recently, very impressed, felt solid, well built and the handling is sports car great.
I agree manual is the way to go and I think we'll probably take the plunge for a used manual trans wagon by next Spring. Or possibly new since new TDI's seem to be negligably more expensive vs used.
