I also suspect the whole 2+2 concept might have been part of it. They are't really much good for four people and it takes away from them as a sports car. I much preferred the original 2 seat Z and RX7--light, fun and affordable. And when you can get to same performance in a sedan it didn't help. A lot of car segments have been brought down by moving upmarket. I owned a '91 Corrado which was a sharp move up market from the Scirocco and tanked pretty quickly too. I remember driving a rotary (was it an RX3?) in the early seventies--what a rocket. I generally like torquey engines verses high revers. Coincidentally there's a write of the RX8 in the latest "Automobile."
