Phil, Unfortunately the Petroleum vs Synthetic debate may rage on forever. There are good arguments for both depending on what a drivers priorities are. I'm a very big advocate of synthetic oils, they are superior and worth the extra cost. I think most service departments offer syntheics if they dont you should go elsewhere or handle the changes yourself. You may also want to investigate syntheic coolant like NEO, better performance and will last almost forever without changing. if you are looking for a brand name I typically use Redline or Amsoil. The only time you might want to stick with less expensive conventional oils is if you have no interest in long term wear. About a year ago I bent a valve in a 350cu Corvette engine with 110,000 miles of exclusive Redline 10W-40. The mechanic that handled the repair asked me "when did you have this engine installed?" I told him it was the original motor and had never been touched, he insisted the valvetrain looked brand new and had no signs of wear. To date that same 1991 Corvette is running strong with more than 125,000 miles and I expect it to go beyond 200,000 miles before any internal service is needed.
