I've seen the (two?) stories about spun bearings on a dyno with M1 (not 0w-40, a previous incantation, and the mix varies). However, there's no actual evidence that it was M1 that caused the problem, they just blamed it on that. There are no lab or independant tests.

I've seen the stories of the race team switching from M1 - but race conditions and oil requirements are FAR different from street requirements, from temp, change frequency, engine characteristics, etc. It's not anywhere near a valid comparision and anyone racing knows that.

I've seen stories at BITOG that iron content seems higher under UOA with M1, but I haven't seen anyone do back to back UOA tests on the same engine with M1 and another oil. Also, I HAVE seen concurrent UOA analysis from two labs show drastically different results.

I do see some people using and suggesting other oils that don't meet A3/B3 or using diesel E7 oils that have high ZDDP and are engineered for different engine characteristics, including high blow by, of diesels. Shear strength IS important and you don't want high ZDDP going through your cat.

I like M1 0W-40. If you know much about oil and engines, you know that you want the LOWEST winter rating you can get in order to get your oil flowing. 80 to 90% of wear is at startup, and a 5W, or better a 0W will reduce that dramatically. It's also one of the only pure synthetics on the market at this point. It meets A3/B3 (shear) and doesn't have high ZDDP.

If I was racing I'd use a different oil. In a DD with occassional sporty driving, I run 0W-40. (FYI - if you think a "0W" is too thin then you need to learn more about oil ratings).
