...turbos have too much spool up time. With the supercharger, they could get the instantaneous boost they needed for this engine.
The reason turbos are usually better (more efficient) than superchargers is that they are not limited to a linear curve attached to the engine. Since turbos are driven by exhaust gas pressure, they can spin much faster than the actual engine RPM under heavy acceleration but provide very little boost when holding constant speed. What the variable compression engine does is control the supercharger through a computer. It remains disengaged until boost is needed for acceleration, much like a turbo does. This is part of the reason why a 1.6L engine can outperform the Viggen but still get over 40mpg.
