Hi George,
Yup, it sure kicks in nively now... With this kind of power, tranny life and EGT levels start becoming a concern, but then again, I have vowed to be judicious with the throttle...
Also, it's actually exactly stock in 1st gear, but is then unlimited in 2nd to 5th gear. Very driveablr, much better than stock. Does not complain at lower revs like a stock 2,3 will. It's been wet (raining) here for the last 3-4 weeks. It's dry today, and I'm off to see a fellow Saaber in a nearby town. I'm a getting a complete paint rework (it's called Mr. Cap, and will seal the paint for 12 mths...hopefully very nice and a good preventive measure before the inevitable winter season).
Basically, as long as I keep it below 3500 rpms it's very "civilised". Naturally even below that level it boosts 1,3 bar so there's plenty of power "on tap". But it's when the revs pass 3600-3700 that it really starts getting messy... At those revs torque just hits you like a steamtrain...and then the wheels spin... At least with slightly damp tarmac it will cause the front wheels to spin violently in 3rd @ 60+ mph.
This is one of the reasons why I will run stock S/W during the winter. You don't want uncontrollable wheelspin in 4th or 5th when you're passing a truck or a Volvo (same thing perhaps?) or some other lesser being...
George, about your car. I have a few thoughts:
1) 3"... Excellent, you won't regret it! Just make sure you get a nice free-flowing cat (or cat replacement pipe as it seems possible to make the "blues" look other ways in your country... (I'm assuming we're talking turbo and back of course).
2) Why do you want a Mitsu turbo? I'm not at all saying that a Mitsu is not a good unit. But if I were you I'd seriously considering upgrading to a Garrett T28 instead. Basically 2 reasons: 1) It's a bolt on, no new pipes and stuff necessary and 2) You can have that one with ball-bearings which drastically improve spool-up (as you seem to be facing lots of Imprezas and other "rice-boilers"....).
3) What intercooler do you have? If you're running stock, you DEFINETLY will want to upgrade that one. This is a MUST DO-upgrade. Get a Crossflow intercooler. It is mounted in the 99 Viggen, the 9-3 TiD, all 200 hp variants and of course the new 9-3 Aero. You should have no trouble finding one through Speedparts as I presume you won't find that many in salvage yards around your part. But trust me, you WANT that one...
4) In terms of software I say go with Speedparts if you go with the Mitsu as this will get you basically the same setup as the 9-3 Aero, so they'll have software for that. Just make sure you get a T-5 software and not a T7 (not sure if the 9-3's w/ Mitsus are T5 or T7, but yours is definetely a T5...). If you choose to go with a T28 then I say Maptun is the choice. They have a 270 hp upgrade for the NG900/9-3 including that turbo. That should get you past a LOOOOOOOOT of Imprezas once you pass 40-50 mph...
5) Can't think of any more meaningful stuff to say right now...too early in the morning. But 4 bullet points just felt measly...
Later,
Karl
