On grey or ductile cast iron manifolds, insulation can cause thermal expansion to increase to the point where the manfold cracks. Might happen, might not. Not worth the risk.
Down pipes can be pipe wrapped. Turbine sections can be insulated, but at the risk of geater heat soak into the bearing cartridge after shut down. Heat shields are ok for manfolds, down pipes and turibine sections.
I would like to tape my down pipe and add heat shields to my 95SET. I did insulate my intake and from the IC to the throttle body. It really seemed to help in the summer heat. So my insulation does help lots with combustion air temperatures, but does nothing go provide relief to under hood components.
I will apply a ball valve to the throttle body coolant loop, to stop it from heating the trottle body when it is not winter. That heating is applied where the PVC gasses are sucked it, and heating is there to prevent the moisture in the blow by gasses from condensing and freezing. It is also too bad that there is not a thermal break where the manifold bolts to the head. That transfers lots of heat to the manifold. The manfold itself absorbs lots of heat from the engine bay.
