Speedometer cable Posted by NCCaniac [Email] (#352) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NCCaniac) on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 10:16:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
While driving my new '71 Sonett III home this last weekend after the purchase, the speedometer suddenly stopped working (after going over a bumpy section of highway). The odometer also was not working, so reading up here it sounded like an issue with the speedometer cable.
I found spiv's instructions on how to remove it and what to check, but my first concern was when I found there did not appear to be any extra cable in the engine bay to push through the firewall to facilitate removing the gauge cluster. Sure enough, when I had removed the screws for the gauge cluster and started to pull it out, it was obvious there was no extra cable already through the firewall behind the dash. So, it seems I should just replace the whole cable (outer sheath and inner cable) with one long enough to provide some additional slack. Now the questions is will one of those universal speedo cables from the local auto parts store be able to connect to the Sonett speedometer and the other end at the transaxle or do I need to get a specialized speedo cable? It seems pretty simple if I can get the two ends connected properly.
Oh, and one more question. The speedo cable and the other gauge electrical wires passed through a hole in the firewall about an inch and a half in diameter that had no gasket, grommet, or anything. (Which explains the warm air I felt coming in under the steering wheel as I drove it home.) What is the best option for sealing that hole around the cable and wires?
