Head gasket sealant?! Posted by El Sonettino [Email] (#1980) [Profile/Gallery] (more from El Sonettino) on Sat, 1 Apr 2017 23:39:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I got my 74 sonett running, but it wouldn't idle. I'm running a 28/36 Weber dcd, rebuilt. Compression test showed number 4 cylinder at about 75 pounds, and all others around 120. The valve stem seals were in terrible shape. The engine is now stripped and ready for rebuilding. when I pulled my heads, It looked as though the gaskets had been installed with some sort of black or dark grey sealant. The manual says nothing about using sealant, and I've never used it on any head gasket I installed on any engine. maybe these heads were pulled and reinstalled at some point....? Either that, or some of the gasket material migrated and welded itself to the heads. I will say that I've never had a harder time removing valve cover and oil pan gaskets than I did with this engine. The head gaskets came away pretty clean and easy, though. Any input will be appreciated!
